Started racing karts in ’73 at age 11, moving up through Formula Fiat Abarth to F3 in ’81, F2 in ’84 and F3000…’85 and ’86, finishing third and second respectively in the championship. Was Team McLaren F1 test driver in ’88 and made his F1 debut the following year with Benetton, moving to Scuderia Italia for ’90-’91 seasons. With dwindling F1 opportunites, Pirro moved to touring cars, landing with Audi in ’95. Beginning in ’99, Pirro was a member of one of Audi’s prototype racing teams, scoring five victories and four other podiums in the 24 Hours of LeMans; plus two Sebring 12 Hour victories. Pirro won Petite LeMans three times and was ALMS series champion in ’02 and •05.
