George was one of the most successful road racers of the 1970s. He won the Trans-Am Championship in both 1972 and 1976 and was the 1972 Can-Am champion, substituting for the injured Mark Donohue in Penske Racing’s Porsche 917/10. ….Raced in the USRRC Championship Car series and several Indianapolis 500 races. Won the 1969 Indy Car race in 1969 at Phoenix International Raceway. In 1973 ,he moved to Formula One driving a Shadow and participated in 13 World Championship Grands Prix. He achieved one podium, and scored a total of five championship points. The following year he competed in the NASCAR Winston Cup series ….Still competes in vintage races, often driving the very same cars that he raced during his heyday. Follmer is a 1999 inductee into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He was honored by the RRDC at its 2016 Annual Dinner at Long Beach.
